Norway will soon see two major astrological events take place on the same day.
Firstly will be the (partial, in Norway) solar eclipse and then, later the same evening, the Perseid meteor shower.
The solar eclipse will be the largest in Norway for over a decade, with between 85-90 percent estimated coverage across the whole country.
In other parts of Europe, notably Spain, coverage will be 100 percent for a 'total' solar eclipse - the first in a century.
The Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak that same evening, and conditions will be particularly good because the solar eclipse means there will be a new moon and therefore little moonlight, experts say, meaning that the skies should be clear.
When can you see the eclipse and meteor shower in Norway?
On Wednesday 12th August.
According to Norwegian media, the solar eclipse will be at around 6.40 pm, depending on where in the country you are.
Then later that evening - experts say in the early morning hours from midnight on the 12th-13th — the meteor shower will appear in the sky.
Where's the best place to view them?
The first people in Norway above to view the eclipse will be in the Svalbard area, where it will take place at 18.29 p.m.
The rest of the country will catch its first glimpses of the eclipse at the following approximate times:
- Nordkapp: 18.42
- Tromsø: 18.45
- Bodø: 18.49
- Trondheim: 18.56
- Bergen: 19.02
- Oslo: 19.03
- Kristiansand: 19.06
The Perseid meteor shower will be most visible south of Dovrefjell, experts say.
How can we view them?
Experts recommend specialist solar eclipse glasses to view the eclipse safely, whilst the meteor shower should be observed from a dark location far away from artificial light.
