Oslo Airport has secured a place among Europe's most punctual airports, ranking second in the latest assessment by Eurocontrol, the continent's joint air traffic control agency.

The Norwegian hub recorded an 80 percent punctuality rate for departures in 2024, equalling that of Stockholm's Arlanda Airport, which saw the most significant year-over-year improvement.

Copenhagen's Kastrup Airport followed closely, completing Eurocontrol's top three rankings among airports handling between 25 and 40 million passengers annually.

Excellent results despite challenging weather conditions

Oslo Airport Director Thorgeir Landevaag expressed pride in the airport's achievement.

"This is a significant recognition for the entire airport. Oslo Airport is among the most weather-hardened hub airports in the world, so it makes us extra proud that we can reach such high (flight punctuality) levels," Landevaag said, as reported by Norwegian news bureau NTB.

A growing hub for travellers

In 2024, Oslo Airport accommodated 26 million passengers, a 5 percent increase from the previous year.

Norwegian Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård also praised the airport's performance.

"Punctuality in everyday travel means a lot to both the business community and passengers. However, it is not always easy to maintain, especially in a country like Norway, with a lot of (challenging) weather. It is particularly impressive and very gratifying that Norway and Oslo Airport excel in this way. We can only take our hats off and congratulate Avinor and the many thousands of employees who make a great effort to ensure good operations in all kinds of weather," Nygård said.

According to Landevaag, the airport's punctuality success results from collaboration among various stakeholders, including air navigation services, ground crews, and technology partners.

"Achieving this level of punctuality requires the dedication of many employees. We have 13,000 skilled employees at the airport who are at the forefront of efficient processes that ensure that flights depart on time. This cooperation we have across actors and passenger processes is the key to our success, and we will continue to develop it in the future so that our good customer experience and punctuality are maintained.

"I would like to extend a big thank you to all employees at Oslo Airport for the effort that is put in every single day to deliver good passenger experiences and punctuality to passengers and airlines. Your work keeps Norway connected to the world," Landevaag said in a press release.
