Bodø airport closed due to poor weather

Bødo airport is closed until further notice on Friday. In addition, strong winds and snowy weather mean that all departures from the airport have been postponed until further notice.

Public broadcaster NRK reports that due to deicing problems, there are several full aircraft on the ground awaiting better conditions.

“Between 350 and 400 travellers are now sitting on planes waiting to take off. There are two full flights to Oslo. We have taken travellers with Widerøe back into the airport,” Øystein Madsen from Bodø airport told NRK.

Due to the issues at the airport, flights from Tromsø and Oslo to Bodø have also been put on hold.

Madsen said that the delays on Friday morning would probably last throughout the day and spread to several airports.

Settling refugees may become harder over time

Oslo City Council believes that settling refugees from Ukraine will become more difficult over time.

“They have lived under difficult conditions in Ukraine for many months and are perhaps even more affected by the war they have lived in and the flight they have been through, compared to those who have come to Norway earlier this year,” Rina Mariann Hansen from the city council told public broadcaster NRK

So far, in 2022, over 1,450 Ukrainian refugees have been settled in Oslo, in addition to around 300 from other countries. In 2023, the municipality believes it will be asked to settle a similar number of people.

The city council will spend up to 300 million kroner on acquiring and refurbishing more housing for refugees.

Industry Minister to look into measures to make food cheaper

Industry Minister Jan Christian Vestre wants to take a closer look at lowering food prices for consumers in Norway.

He will investigate the consequences of big chains being involved in so many parts of the supply chain and the use of clauses that ban competitors from opening new stores.

He said to the Norwegian newspaper VG that he would also look into the possibility of making it easier to introduce foreign supermarket chains to the Norwegian market.

King Harald to retire from sailing

Norway’s King Harald, a former Olympic yachtsman, has decided to call time on sailing, NRK reports.

In the summer, he took part in the sailing World Cup in Switzerland.

“It was very nice. It was fun to be involved again. But that was probably the last time,” he said.

During his sailing career, he participated in three Olympic Games and took World Cup silver medals home in 1974 and 1984. In 1987, he and his crew won gold in the World Cup, and in 2005 was named sailor of the year after winning European Championship gold.
