The busiest day for Christmas departures out of Norway will likely be December 22nd, and airport operator Avinor has issued advice to travellers leaving the country this Christmas.

Some 134,000 passengers will depart from Norway’s six largest airports on Thursday, with Oslo airport alone seeing 74,600 travellers pass through its departure gates, airport operator Avinor has said.

This will make Thursday the busiest day for Christmas travel out of Norway. However, Avinor has said the number of passengers expected to pass through Oslo airport is still well below pre-pandemic levels.

“Thursday, December 22nd is the busiest departure day, while Monday, January 2nd is the biggest return day. There is also a high level of activity during Christmas. Since Christmas Eve falls on a weekend this year, you get many days in romjul, and many will then celebrate Christmas in one place and New Year in another,” press officer Øystein Løwer said.

A typical year sees around 95,000 people pass through Oslo Gardermoen Airport on the busiest day of the holiday season. Due to that, Avinor is not expecting long queues and delays, its press officer Øystein Løwer has said.

“It also means that we do not expect crowds and queues, even on the busiest day of the Christmas procession,” he said.

Avinor has advised passengers to show up to the airport in good time, arrive prepared and leave wrapped Christmas gifts in their hold luggage.
