Police to increase drink-driving stops

This week police will sharply increase the number of stops to test for drink and drug driving as part of its annual action week against being behind the wheel whilst intoxicated.

“An intoxicated driver exposes not only themself but also other road users to danger. We ask everyone to contribute to road safety by driving without drugs,” Knut Smedsrud, chief of the emergency police, said in a press release.

The risk of being involved in an accident is 68 times higher for a drunk driver than a sober one, according to a report from the Institute of Transport Economics.

The number of people caught driving under the influence is up in Norway this year, totalling over 9,000 between January and October.

Most expensive weekend ever for energy prices in central Norway

Central Norway, where prices have typically been lower than the south and west of Norway, saw its most costly weekend for energy prices ever, Europower reports.

On average, prices in the region were 2.71 kroner per kilowatt hour, including grid rent, taxes and VAT, meaning that the new record is around 40 percent higher than the previous one.

The figure is also nearly nine times higher than the average Sunday price for the region.

Forecasts show that December will be colder than typical in Norway, meaning prices may rise even further.

Avalanche warning

A yellow avalanche warning is in place in several areas of Norway due to the presence of fresh snow, making it easier to trigger smaller avalanches.

The danger warning has been issued for Vest-Finnmark, Lyngen, Tromsø, Sør-Troms, Ofoten, Svartisen, Helgeland, Trollheimen, Romsdal and Sunnmøre.

It is recommended that those heading up mountains (or down) avoid terrain steeper than 30 degrees.

Housing price figures

Real Estate Norway (Eindom Norge) will present its figures for the housing market in November later today.

In recent months, house prices in Norway have begun to fall, even when adjusted for seasonal changes.

Volunteering prize

Volunteering Norway has its annual Day of Volunteering. As part of the day, Crown Prince Haakon, Storting President Masud Gharahkhani, Culture and Equality Minister Anette Trettebergstuen and Health and Care Minister Ingvild Kjerkol will attend a ceremony where the National Volunteering Prize 2022 will be handed out.
