Government criticised for not increasing child benefits

Several political parties believe the Norwegian government is failing ordinary families. In recent days, they called out the government for not increasing child benefits while prices are rising.

The combination of more expensive food, more expensive electricity, and more interest rate hikes have negatively affected the budgets of a number of ordinary families.

The Salvation Army reports a sharp increase in people collecting food handouts, the newspaper VG reports.

The Red Party's (Rødt) Marie Sneve Martinussen and the Christian Democrat's (KRF) Olaug Bollestad believe the government should increase child benefits in line with price increases.

"The situation as it is now is absolutely crazy," Bollestad said.

Total lunar eclipse visible from Svalbard

You will be able to experience a total lunar eclipse on Tuesday from Svalbard unless cloudy weather gets in the way.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are aligned in space. On Tuesday, a total lunar eclipse will occur, as the Earth will come between the Sun and the full Moon, blocking the Sun's direct rays from lighting up the Moon.

The total lunar eclipse will occur between 10:09am and 1:49pm. The moon will be entirely inside the Earth's total shadow at 11:16am.

The final phase of the phenomenon will be visible only in north-eastern Troms and Finnmark. People in Svalbard might be lucky enough to see the total eclipse, astronomer Jan-Erik Ovaldsen writes.

The previous total lunar eclipse in Norway occurred on May 16th this year. There will be a partial lunar eclipse on October 28, 2023, which will be visible throughout Norway.

"The parties have agreed to take a break in the negotiations until tomorrow at noon. Then the mediation will resume," mediator Geir Engebretsen told VG.

If the parties do not reach an agreement, an escalation of the strike will take place on Wednesday, when a further 700 employees could join the strike. The escalation would mainly affect kindergartens in Bodø, Bergen, Askøy, Øygarden, and Karmøy.

The labour dispute is primarily about pensions.
