What you need to know about Norwegian's new baggage rules
Passengers with airline Norwegian can no longer bring large cabin bags on board flights for free if they purchase the cheapest ticket option.
Travellers who book the cheapest tickets will no longer have a cabin bag included in their fare, the company confirmed on its website.
Should customers wish to bring a cabin bag with them, they will have to select a ticket above the most basic price level or pay extra to add a cabin bag to their booking.
The rule change is intended to "make journeys more comfortable for everyone and ensure that flight departs on time," according to the airline.
How the new rules apply to individual passengers depends on the date on which tickets were purchased.
If you purchase flights on or after January 23rd, 2020, you will have to pay extra to take a cabin bag on your flight. That is because the cheapest type of ticket, LowFare, does not include a cabin bag.
You will, however, still be able to bring a small bag – sized 30x20x38cm and weighing no more than 10 kilograms – with you into the cabin. This bag must be place under the seat in front of you during the flight.
If you travel with a LowFare ticket, you will have to pay to add extra cabin baggage to your booking. That can be done up to four hours prior to departure.
The other ticket types (LowFare+, Flex, Premium and PremiumFlex) still include free cabin baggage weighing up to 10 kilograms (LowFare+) or 15 kilograms (all other ticket types).
Hand luggage that exceeds the restrictions for your ticket type will be charged and placed in the aircraft's hold, according to Norwegian's website.
For tickets purchased prior to January 23rd, 2020, the old cabin baggage rules apply.
That means one free cabin bag and a small personal item that can be placed under the seat in front of you (such as a small handbag, a narrow laptop bag or a bag from the duty-free shop) are included in the ticket price, according to information on Norwegian's website.
