A Norwegian man crashed into a herd of reindeer Tuesday night, killing at least 19.

A total of 19 reindeer were killed or had to be put down after a passenger vehicle ran into a herd on the E6 motorway in Finnmark.

The incident took place just before 11pm Tuesday night. The owner of the herd was alerted and was quickly on site to deal with the situation.

“We were alerted by the driver of the vehicle that he had hit a herd of reindeer, and that he was not able to tell how many of the animals were injured or killed,” Asgeir Aule, operations manager of the Finnmark police district told NTB.

It was later found that 19 reindeer had been killed or had to be put down as a result of the collision, a number which may rise even further, as it is possible that some of the reindeer that sustained critical injuries may have fled the scene.

“It is exceedingly rare to see incidents such as this where so many reindeer are hurt and killed in an accident with a standard passenger car,” Aule said.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured, but the car has sustained major damage. The accident took place in Stokkedalen between Alta and Hammerfest.
