Norway's Tromsø has made the Lonely Planet guide's 2015 list of the ten best places to visit in Europe, with the report's authors praising the city's outdoorsy attractions.

“Tromsø's star has been rising and rising in recent year," the guide writes. "The ‘Arctic capital’ abounds with adventures thanks to snow-crowned mountains and big wilderness in its backyard."

The guide highlights hiking, kayaking, whale-watching, skiing, snowmobiling and dogsledding, as some of the energetic activities the city offers.

"And come winter or summer, the city brims with events, from midnight sun marathons in June to the reindeer-racing in February," it ends.

Other places on the travel guide's list include Portugal’s Azores, Leipzig in Germany and Malaga in Spain.

The guide also notes that the city is in the middle of building a five star hotel, designed to draw moneyed tourists looking to see the Northern Lights.

The Krystall hotel, sited just outside of the city, will feature a snowflake design that will float on the surrounding Norwegian waters, while the glass structure will allow guests to enjoy the wonders of the Northern Lights above.

Koen Olthuis, the architect founder of Dutch Docklands, which is building the hotel, told The Local: “After a long intensive period of research on location and regulations, work has started. Key for the Krystall's design was that it should be a simple glass building that would allow guests to get the most spectacular view on the Northern Lights from their beds.”
