McCain to vote down would-be envoy
Former US presidential candidate John McCain has pledged to vote to block George Tsunis, the would-be new ambassador to Norway, from taking up his post.
"There will be a lively debate in Congress when the vote on President Obama's new ambassador to Norway comes up," Senator McCain said as Foreign Minister Børge Brende met him in Washington DC on Wednesday. "I'm going to vote against Tsunis, because I do not think he is qualified," McCain said. Tsunis, a Greek American hotel millionaire and Democratic party donor, blundered through his first selection hearing in the US Senate. He referred to Norway's "president", in an apparent belief that the country is a republic rather than a constitutional monarchy, and described the Progress Party, one of the two parties in government as "marginal elements", "spewing their hatred".
