More than a fifth of girls in Norway experience sexual abuse before they reach adulthood, according to a new survey by the Norwegian Centre for Violence and Traumatic Stress.
The centre reported that 21 percent of women report sexual abuse before the age of 18, with seven percent reporting either being raped before age 18 or having sex with someone over 18 before their 13th birthday.
"There have been previous studies that have had similar findings as ours," Siri Thoresen, one of the researchers behind the report, told Aftenposten. "People are surprised every time they see these figures."
The rate of abuse for boys is lower, with eight percent reporting sexual abuse before the age of 18.
