A fisherman has wowed Norway's fishing community after sending pictures of a monster 80kg cod he caught last year to the Fiskeribladet trade newspaper.

"I don't have the exact weight of the cod, but I had difficulty lifting it, so it must have been around 80 kilograms and it was as tall as I am myself," Mads Gerhardsen, a commercial fisherman based in Båtsfjord, far-Northern Norway, told FiskeribladetFiskaren.

Gerhardsen said he caught the beast with a net while working on the 120-foot MS Kildin last year.

The cod is not far away from what is believed to be the biggest cod ever caught -- a 96 kilogram behemoth caught in 1895 off the coast of Massachusetts in the US.

Speaking to The Local, Gerhardsen downplayed his catch.

"I'm a professional fisherman, so today in this season we've fished 500 tonnes of cod. It happens in the season sometimes that we get very big fish, but this is one of the biggest."
