At least one person has been arrested by Norwegian police after a group of activists attempted to remove a toll gate built on the old E18 road in Sande, south of Oslo. Over 100 anti-toll booth campaigners arrived on the site in more than 40 cars, bringing pipe wrenches and blow torches to cut away the metal. The protesters managed to destroy parts of the toll station before police arrived at just after 10.30pm on Sunday night. The police returned to the site at just before 1am, when a new group of campaigners arrived. The toll station was scheduled for removal in August, as the cost of the road has already been repaid, but the Public Roads Administration decided that the cost of demolition, around 26 million kroner, should be covered by allowing the tollbooth to run until September. Norway's toll roads have become a major political issue in the run-up to this month's general election.
