The mayor of Narvik, one of Norway's most northerly cities, has rejected plans from ethnic Sami politicians to rename it 'Ahkkunjarga'.

"The municipality has consulted the Language Council, and it was concluded that there was no clear Sami name for Narvik, and the proposal was therefore rejected by the city council," Tore Nysæter said on Wednesday.

He accused the Labour party's Sami representative Vibeke Larsen, who made the proposal, of seeking to score political points in the run-up to the general election on September 9.

"I note that the proposal from the Labor Sami representative Vibeke Larsen is primarily aimed at municipalities with Conservative mayor," he said.

Norway has the world's biggest population of ethnic Sami people, who also live in the Northern areas of Sweden, Finland and Russia.
