Men on top as Norway nears five million

Norway is home to 12,000 more men than women, new population figures show, with the country’s male dominance increasing rapidly since last year.

At the start of the new year, 2,498,900 men and 2,487,000 women were registered as living in Norway, according to fresh figures from Statistics Norway (SSB).
Just a year earlier, Norway’s male surplus stood at 1,400.
The country’s gender balance has shifted markedly since the population reached four million in 1975. At that time there were 25,000 more women than men in Norway.
At the end of 2011, a total of 4,985,900 people were living in Norway. Statistics Norway has calculated that the population is likely to reach five million on March 19th.
Viewed in pure numbers, Norway’s population grew at its fastest ever rate in 2011, with 65,000 more people living in the country than the year before. Not since 1920 has the population grown so quickly in percentage terms.
Immigration accounted for 70 percent of the increase last year.
