Princess Astrid celebrates 80th birthday

Princess Astrid celebrated her 80th birthday on Sunday evening with a dinner at the royal palace hosted by King Harald and Queen Sonja.

A self-confessed sports fanatic, the octogenarian mother of five is also well-known for her work to help the disadvantaged in society.
In the fourteen years preceding her younger brother Harald’s marriage in 1968, Astrid was Norway’s First Lady, working in tandem with her father King Olav V on official duties.
Princess Astrid is renowned for her loyalty to her brother and remains close to the 74-year-old king.
Despite suffering for years from ankle trouble, the Princess is often seen braving the cold by her brother’s side as they cheer on Norwegian athletes in the winter sports.
