Oslo mayor welcomes immigrant boom

Updated: 14 Mar 2012 16:47 GMT+01:00

Oslo’s mayor Fabian Stang has said he is unconcerned by statistics showing that immigrants will make up half of Oslo’s population three decades from now.

His reaction stood in stark contrast to that of Progress Party leader Siv Jensen, who immediately called for tighter restrictions on immigration when Statistics Norway published its projections on Tuesday.

“No, I’m not concerned,” Stang told news agency NTB.

“But the high number shows that we’ll have a major task integrating immigrants. It’s up to parliament and the government to decide how many people will move to the country. Our job is to integrate them.”

The mayor pointed out that 2040 remains a distant point in time: by then, many immigrants will have lived in Norway for almost 100 years.

“It’s an interesting question as to how long one should be considered an immigrant. For me, the most important thing is to be able to provide all immigrants with the best possible schools so they can receive a good education and get a job. It’s then of lesser importance what skin colour, religion or sexual orientation one has,” said Stand.

In 2040, 70 percent of the Norwegian capital’s first and second generation immigrants will have their roots in countries outside the 30-member European Economic Area, Statistics Norway said.

The study, the first ever projection of immigration trends to be published in Norway, shows that the largest cities will also see the biggest upsurge in immigrant numbers.

Immigrants are defined in the statistics as either people who have either moved to Norway from another country, or the Norway-born children of two first-generation immigrants.

According to Statistics Norway’s most likely scenario, Oslo’s immigrant population will rise from today’s 28 percent to 47 percent in 2040.

In the country as a whole, the immigrant population is expected to jump from 12 to 24 percent, or from 600,000 people today to 1.5 million in 2040.

Centre Party Secretary of State Dag-Henrik Sandbakken, at the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, noted that rising immigration is part of a global trend that will continue to present Norway with a mixture of possibilities and challenges.

“Norway has benefited from the high level of workforce immigration to the country in recent years. Statistics Norway’s prognosis makes for exciting reading, even if it also entails many uncertainties,” Sandbakken told NTB.

Local governments all over the country have become more accustomed to immigration and are well prepared to meet new integration challenges head on, said Sandbakken.

But for Siv Jensen, the trend is deeply worrying.

“For far too long Norway has been an attractive country for asylum seekers and immigrants. The Progress Party believes it’s high time for more restrictive policies,” she said on Tuesday.

“The more immigrants there are the more difficult it will be to make integration work,” according to the 42-year-old head of the populist opposition party, which has long called for stricter immigration rules.

Jensen said the Progress Party wanted Norway to hand out fewer residence permits to immigrants. She also called for the country to tighten immigration policy loopholes.

For instance, she suggested that an immigrant marrying somebody from the same country of origin in Norway should not automatically be granted residency.

“We must admit that there are major differences in the types of integration challenges posed by different immigrants.

"Norway still has a major need for workers, and labour-market immigration from Eastern Europe presents completely different integration challenges than immigration from Eastern Africa,” said Jensen.

Get rid of this clown, and I mean yesterday.

@ Blondebanger and VicTaulic. It is this kind of clueless dhimmi door-mat politicians that are endangering the people of Europe with ethnocide of the native peoples. The current crop of politicians must be got rid of(voting them out) and replacing them with patriotic minded politicians. The enablers of unmitigated mass immigration of third world senenth century savages should be put on trial before a War Crimes Tribunal for ethnocide. For your information I am a Asian whose people suffered and continue to suffer from the predation of these savages.

This guy is pandering to his future political base. He knows who the majority is in a few years and he wants them voting for him.
2012-03-15 12:34:37 by friendlyfrank
BourgeoisieBohme you are correct about what he thinks. But what will actually happen is the rising immigrant population will vote for one of their own and this guy will be out of a Job.That is exactly what happened in Rotterdam.
2012-03-15 14:37:53 by BourgeoisieBohme
You are totally right. They vote for their own, look at the left party and how the immigrant MPs have been elected due to their own voting for them. It's just the way it is. You think blacks voted for John McCain in the last US election?

I think it is truly disgusting that the government and the people of Norway and other European nations would ever allow things to get to the level that in just a few decades half of Oslo and many other places will be immigrants. Does no one care about the future existence of the people who shaped the modern world? Imagine a world where our western beliefs, culture and ethnicity are over taken in the lands our people have inhabited for thousands of years. I believe that more should be done to protect our unique and beautiful race from extinction there are plenty of places where the other cultures of the world exist and probably always will exist why would we not want this future for our culture and race as well very sad in my opinion.

@Gerald, I could not agree more. I have many friends from India and they stories break my heart. Not sure where you are from but it is definitely not rosey in India now... . Why is the mayor so sure Norway will be the exception if the Muslims have not managed to assimilate successfully with any society where they remain a minority? We all know that lefties allowed immigration from the Middle East so that they got new voters and their political opponents could be destroyed. Now they have to pretend it was all about multiculturalism because telling the truth would hurt them. The fact is that because of their pervetred ambition to destroy opposing political parties, they are now destroying their own country. It won't be long before this guy is out of his job because it will be taken by an immigrant. It has already started in oslo council and then the Working Party members were running around like headless chickens. What the heck did they expect?

Being Dutch, I always considered Norwegians a little bit off whack. But now I'm sure, you guys are TOTALLY off whack! Like Sweden Norway is beyond salvation, goodbye.

''I do believe we should limit third world immigration, but we have to let in some, who else will drive our taxis, trams, train and buses, or clean our homes and offices?'' Another misinformed an naiive soul. Are these jobs an insult to the endemic population? You think you are pro immigration but really you just enjoy the idea of cheap workforce i.e. contemporary slavery. But the price is too high to pay especially for the women in Oslo.

mikeyv, " . I'm from NZ, I've only got 3 kids. Not all immigrants to Norway are from the third world, I do believe we should limit third world immigration, but we have to let in some, who else will drive our taxis, trams, train and buses, or clean our homes and offices" When did you come to Norway, that you already have three kids? Our definition of immigrant included bearing machine like you even if you are from the WHITE HOUSE make you are still an immigrant we are afraid people like you will invades our dearly beloved country Norway like bees If NZ is better why are you here??? I wonder also if you are better or earn better salary than a tram or train drivers??

I've visited Norway where my gf lives. While it may not matter, she has "pure" Norwegian roots. On my trip, I have met Norwegians that have been very hospitable and loving with me and the way they treat each other. However, this thread and threads on websites like Aftenposten really disappoints me because I believe Norwegians are more than that. These hateful remarks on immigrants and labeling them as "Third World" which is a derogatory term is completely unethical, immoral and those are not qualities I have witnessed of a "typical" Norwegian. While I understand the concerns of "losing our heritage", I do not understand the disrespect shown toward the new-comers. Who defines what "true heritage" really means? Does that mean everyone in Norway must be Caucasian and there should be no equal rights for other ethnicities? Why is there such a notion of nationalism when all we should really aim for is Oneness of humanity and look beyond each others' differences? Just remember, we all have descended from an African and were all black at some point in history, thinking that way may change your perspective on thing a little, I hope at least. These critical questions must be thought before passing judgements about immigrants. The Norwegian government is not "dumb" to allow unwanted people in the Norwegian society. I wish to see this perspective of Norwegians change over time because this sort of nationalism has failed to work over the past centuries and it creates hate rather than brotherhood and promoting humanity.
2012-03-18 06:21:33 by nomania
Also want to add that there has to be another way of tackling the situation of Norwegians thinking they're "losing out" on their heritage. Bigotry is never a solution, maybe stricter immigration laws with a background check before letting someone in?
2012-03-19 03:25:38 by Chupapinga
@nomania- You obviously have never lived in Oslo nor come into contact with the Middle Eastern and North Africans living there. Talk with someone who has lived there for a long time and ask them about how the crime-rate has skyrocketed. Also, ask them about rape. Try to know what you're talking about before you talk about it.
2012-03-19 09:48:34 by mikeyv
@doncharles, you can bet on it that I earn significantly more than an Oslo tram or bus driver. I've been in Norway for 6 years, I had 1 child back in NZ and 2 additional children in Norway, my wife is Norwegian. I'm an international sales manager for a major Norwegian exporter, I've had this job for 5 years. I've never caused any problems for the Norwegian govt, I've never asked for anything, I didn't need any assistance getting a job or learning how to fit in, I don't beat my wife or kids, I know how to wash myself and use a toilet, I don't follow any religion, I have a universtity education, in short I'm the kind of person Norway should be proud to have an an immigrant.

@mikeyv, Is good you have those quality you claim you have. But is good that you atleast acknowledge that you are an immigrant all of you represent a threat to Norwegian heritage. and i want you to read the article well again it does not discriminate against any kind of immigrants wether third as your claim of first. It only say that the presence of immigrant like you and others is a threat to Norway. Because you are giving birth to so many children while We native dont and very soon you will have you fourt child am not sure you stop there. Frankly you no that immigrant wether fron USA, Canada, AU, EU,NZ,ASIA represent a threat to Norway. I EVEN FIND IT VERY DISTURBING THAT AN IMMIGRANT LIKE YOU, THINKING ILL OF FELLOW IMMIGRANT, YOU THINK OTHER IMMIGRANT FROM POOR COUNTRIES ARE NOT EDUCATED OR THEY ARE JUST FATED TO BE SLAVE CONFINES TO DIRTY JOBS. IF YOU DONT CHANGE THIS MENTALITY YOU WILL SOON LOSE THAT JOB AND BE FORCE TO BE A TAXI DRIVER. YOU ARE LUCKY BECAUSE OF YOUR LOVELY CHILDREN YOU CANNOT BE DEPORTED. SO YOUR FELLOW IMMIGRANT BEAT THEIR WIVES, THEY ARE NOT EDUCATED, THEY NEED SOCIAL ASSISTANCE, THEY ARE NOT THE KIND OF IMMIGRANT NORWAY WANTS RIGHTS??? MANY NORWEGIANS WHO ARE MORE QUALIFY THAN YOU CAN FIND JOB BECUASE PEOPLE LIKE HAVE TAKING THEIR PLACE RECIEVING A LOWER SALARY THAN AVAERAGE NORWEGIAN. THE EMPLOYERS ARE OUT TO MAKE PROFIT THEY LIKE CHEAP LABOURERS LIKE YOU.

Well, I can see you share the delusions of grandieur typical for many born and bred Norwegians, so I have no doubts you fit in rather well. Paradoxically, those delusions have led Norway to problems with immigration because deluded Norwegian politicians have decided Norwegian culture is so great, people of less 'civilised' lifestyle will internalise great Norwegian values as soon as they experience them. Nothing like that has happened.

In the meantime that I'm reading this article sitting on my coach, breathing the fresh air of Viña Del Mar (my city) , Chile , located in the "third world" as many of you called it, it remains me the word "evolution", what have you understood about this word?, do you still live in caves?, because your thoughts do, you behave like a caveman defending "their" river, maybe some trees, unbelieveble!!!, but, of course, I know very well who you are, the so common ignorants, the same happens in my own country (Chile) with peruvian people, you are only victims of your parents or other adults, whose teachings are reflected every time that you give an opinion, but it's not funny, on the contrary, it's really sad, 'cause you share the same thoughts that many murderers over the world; just like you, they begun with this evil seed. I do really hope you change your mind, still you've got enough time.
2012-03-26 04:06:10 by nomania
I agree with catocranico, these bigoted views will only cause problems for the Norwegians and yes this type of mentality to have a "pure" Norway is indeed bigoted and is going to expire sooner or later. I've been to Norway and I believe in the hospitablity of Norwegians. They are an open-minded people and seeing such strong opinions against other cultures/religions just shows that to be "civilized" means different things to different people. Every culture is unique and beautiful in its own way and should be celebrated if it concurs with human values that we all share as humans.

Your mayor Fabian Stang is a traitor to his people. By what right does he change the very face of a country by aiding and abetting the introduction of immigrants of different races who have no desire to fit in...only want to milk the system and abuse the culture and people who have lived there since the last Ice Age!? America has become a cess pool because of that very same, insane policy. Get away from the politically correct politicians and businesses who need their vote and money and the everyday, common people, the TRUE AMERICANS, will tell you how sad this once great proud country has become. I had hoped to immigrate to Norway one day as my ancestors came from there and I have always been drawn to its beauty and people...MY PEOPLE! Now I see it you are letting it slip away from you. Soon it will be nothing more than another crime ridden, mongrelized northern european nation with no culture or history of it's own. Just another America. You still have time....get the military behind you...You..the PEOPLE....have that right and obligation to your children and grandchildren. Throw out the politicians who will sell out YOUR BIRTHRIGHT! If you need immigrants look to the US. There are MILLIONS of descendants or Norweigens/ Nordic Nations here who are highly educated and LAW ABIDING and of your RACE! I'd come in an instant. We would fit back into the culture like a glove. PLEASE....PLEASE...PLEASE WAKE UP!

@nomania. Your comment "Just remember, we all have descended from an African and were all black at some point in history" Please advise when the boarder between Iran and Turkey; where the Garden of Eden was, had been populated with blacks. Please advice when Seti noted the colors of the region that blacks were not further north, as you claim. The only ancient temples found in Africa did snake worship. They still have their witch doctors and hunt albino humans to eat. Please advise why the Coburn bible was Egyptian then Irish when Egypt had Israelite slaves. Please advise why the stone masons and Knights Templar are not black? Please tell me where the tribe of Judah is today and the who sits on that throne. Please also tell me where the pillow of Jacob is located. Please point out to me the Israelite symbols that are all around and what nations they belong to. I want to assure you that you are in an Israelite nation, Norway and that the 4th empire is made of Iron and clay. They clay is the diversity that is brought in; which is happening now. Your race card is weak and Oslo should be voted out and run out.
